Wilfred (Wally) Berg The Ferry Store c. 1950 | marker on paper Notes: Wally was known as Muskegon's premier artist. He also spent some time in the Saugatuck area sketching the "sights". Here, we have the Ferry Store, the west shore landing for the chain ferry that carried passengers across the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck, Michigan. In the background we see the Tourist Home Hotel on the east bank of the river. The Ferry Store had been an "institution" in Saugatuck since the 1930s and earlier. Its proximity to the art colony at Ox-Bow made it an invaluable source for art supplies and necessities for the artists who were summering in Saugatuck.
