Iwo Jima 1
Work on Paper
Lithograph by Nat Steinberg behind glass with 1-inch brown wood frame and white mat. The image is a reproduction of the 1945 photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. Steinberg closely copied the iconic WWII photo, only enhancing the sky with the suggestion of clouds and diagonal, shading strokes to create a halo of light around the flag and foreground figures.
The print has the title "Iwo Jima" written on the lower left edge and Steinberg's signature on the lower right edge.
Below the image, a window in the mat frames a note that credits the source material, "To a great bunch of real fighting marines, Joe Rosenthal, A.P., Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, 2/23/45"
Attached to the back of the frame is a pocket of papers likely attached to the work's original backing paper that includes Steinberg's pre-printed artist CV, a newspaper clipping about the Rosenthal photo and a dedication, "1986 To Nancy and Henry, with love always, Isabel Steinberg."
