Iwo Jima 2
Work on Paper
Lithograph by Nat Steinberg behind glass with 1-inch black frame and 2-inch white mat.
The image is a reproduction of the 1945 photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. Steinberg closely copied the iconic WWII photo, only enhancing the sky with the suggestion of clouds and diagonal, shading strokes to create a halo of light around the flag and foreground figures.
The print has the title "Iwo Jima" written on the lower left edge and Steinberg's signature on the lower right edge.
Attached to the back of the frame is a pocket containing a dedication, "To my dear friends Nancy and Henry from their dear friend Isabel Steinberg for all their many kindnesses to me" that was likely attached to the work's original backing paper and a color photo of the Marines Arlington monument that was based on the Rosenthal image.
