Ambrotype
The image belonged to Ev Thomas. His son, John Thomas, donated the image to the SDHC but has no information about the origins of the photo or the sitter. The ambrotype was introduced in the 1850s but by the 1860s it was superseded by the tintype. Like the daguerreotype, which the Ambrotype replaced, each is a unique original that could only be duplicated by using a camera to copy it. Typically this kind of image is mounted in a decorate frame.
