This portrait is typical of a class assignment piece done for Fredrick Fursman's painting class at the Ox-Bow. Fursman used Myers (and other "locals") to model for his own work as well as for his student classes at the art colony. In real life, Myers ran the chain ferry between the west and east banks of the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck.
