53. Ox-Bow House

Originally built as non-denominational religious meeting house in 1870, this building served as the Douglas Methodist Episcopal Church until 1894. From 1918 to about 1930, it was the International Order of the Odd Fellows (IOOF) Hall. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Douglas Athletic Club purchased the building, paying off the mortgage with money collected at softball/baseball games, raffles and bingo parties. The building was furnished with pool tables, ping-pong tables and an indoor basketball court. After a short stint as a scout and Saugatuck Township Park Commission headquarters in the late 1970s, the building served as the Saugatuck District Library from 1981 to 2020 when a new library building was built across Center Street. In 2022, the building was repurposed as Ox-Bow House, a branch of the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency.
