Kemah
Location: 633 Allegan Street, Saugatuck
Date: 1906 / 1926 / restoration, 2003-2006

Kemah is an American Indian word meaning “in the teeth of the wind,” a fitting name for this large Arts & Crafts home high on the bluff, facing the winds of Lake Kalamazoo. The house began as a smaller 1906 cottage designed by the Chicago architect Thomas Eddy Tallmadge. It was then expanded in the mid-1920s by the artist-architect Carl Hoerman for Alys Springer, whose husband William was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade. It is one of the finest Arts & Crafts summer homes in Michigan. Some of its features include stained glass windows in the Prairie Style, a rolled “Cotswold” roof, hand-carved doors, and a rathskeller and cavern.
