An early photo of the Hoermans’ Chalet Studio at 621 Pleasant Street.

Carl Hoerman was a Bavarian-born architect and artist who is nationally known for his landscape paintings of Michigan dunes and the Southwestern American desert. Along with his spouse, Christiana Hoerman, Carl built this charming home and studio at 621 Pleasant Street in 1910. This chalet is a very complicated mix of handcrafted surfaces in a Bavarian-American Arts & Crafts manner. Although the home has been expanded over the years —  and the wooden entry arch replaced in stone — it still brings a surprising touch of Bavaria to Pleasant Street.
