108. Herman Bekken’s Blacksmith Shop

Herman Bekken’s Blacksmith Shop at 42 North Washington Street in Douglas was built in 1897.

In the days before the automobile, the village was kept on the move by the village blacksmith, who shod the horses, fixed farm tools and built or repaired carriages and wagons. This humble brick building at 42 North Washington Street in Douglas was the last of the local blacksmith shops. The building is well preserved by the Bekken family.
