100. The Douglas Dunes / Dunes Resort

Michigan’s first gay resort as it looked in 2008.

This building at 333 Blue Star Highway in Douglas was originally the drive-in Amity Motel, built in 1965. Dunes founders Larry Gammons and Carl Jennings, after their bids to purchase properties in Saugatuck for a Gay bar were repeately rejected, were driving through Douglas when they spotted the Amity. They purchased the property in 1981 and got to work. The 7-acre Douglas Dunes had 22 motel rooms, a restaurant, cabaret lounge, volleyball court, patio deck and pool. When new owners Mike Jones, Dan Esterline, and Greg Trzybinski purchased the property in 1998, the name was changed to The Dunes Resort. After many additions to the now twenty-acre site, The Dunes has evolved into what the New York Times has called “the Fire Island of the Midwest.” The Dunes is an all-season vacation destination as well as a gathering place for the local LGBTQ+ population.
