Brewery / Twin Gables Inn
Location: 900 Lake Street, Saugatuck
Date: 1865

This structure began as the icehouse portion of a brewery that was established by Samuel and Susan Clipson in the early 1860s—which proudly advertised, “we have on hand a good supply of stock ale and beer which will strengthen the invalid and is a health tonic for all.” The building grew to incorporate parts of a tannery, barrel making and shingle factories, and a boatbuilding works. In 1912 the building became a boarding house and hotel and has been known as Twin Gables since 1922, when it was quite popular for its restaurant and orchestra. Members of Al Capone’s gang reportedly frequented the inn during the prohibition era. The structure was moved a short distance to make way for new Blue Star Highway and bridge access in 1936. The building was restored in 1982 and is listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
