89. Brewery / Twin Gables Inn

This structure began as the ice house portion of a brewery established by Samuel and Susan Clipson in the early 1860s which proudly advertised, “we have on hand a good supply of stock ale and beer which will strengthen the invalid and is a health tonic for all.”
After the brewery closed, the building was used as a tannery, barrel stave mill, door and sash factory, shingle factory and a boat building shop. In 1912 the building became a boarding house and hotel and has been known as Twin Gables since 1922, when it was popular for its restaurant and orchestra. Members of Al Capone’s gang reportedly frequented the inn during the prohibition era. The structure was moved a short distance to make way for new Blue Star Highway and bridge access in 1936. The building was restored in 1982 and is listed on the State Register of Historic Places. In 2016, new owners changed the name of the inn to “Hotel Saugatuck.”
