74. Boat Tours

Left: The Douglas, a beach launch with a load of passengers on the Kalamazoo River. / Right: the Star of Saugatuck II docked at Water Street.

Boat tours have long been a popular attraction for visitors, providing a scenic view of the area from the water.

The 82-passenger Queen of Saugatuck was an authentic stern-wheeler, built for Bruce and Marilyn Starring of Saugatuck in 1978 by the local Shashaguay shop, based on the Island Queen design by Dick Hoffman. In 1992 the boat’s name was changed to the Star of Saugatuck. The vessel remained in service until 2000, when the larger, 150-passenger Star of Saugatuck II, also a stern-wheel paddleboat, was launched.

From 2002 to about 2018, a 28-passenger former WWII amphibious vessel known as the R Knoll amused visitors with duck tours over land and water.
