Beech-Hurst Farmhouse
Location: 121 Ferry Street, Douglas
Date: Ca. 1872

Erwin Hewett founded this orchard farm in the 1870s. In the early 1900s it became home for teacher and government administrator Lillian Grimes Eddy and her husband, Civil War veteran Scott Eddy. Named “Beech-Hurst” after a large grove of Beech trees, the rather plain Greek Revival “L-house” was given some internal and external modern touches and additions of the time. It was here that Lillian composed poetry, wrote a book, and translated texts from Latin to English. The house remains as the summer gathering place for the Eddy family.
