Baseball in Douglas
Location: Beery Field, Center Street, Douglas
Date: Since 1902

Dressed in their new uniforms, members of the Douglas Athletic Club played their first baseball game in 1902. Thereafter Douglas became known for its frequent baseball activity, with the DAC team entertaining many spectators on Saturdays. The local barber led the campaign for the purchase of a village ball field, and in 1935 the present field was dedicated with a game between the local team and the world champion softball team from St. Joseph. Today the “Douglas Dutchers” Vintage League baseball club plays on the same field; it was renamed Beery field in the 1980s, in honor of the late Superintendent of Public Works (and former Douglas Athletic Club center fielder) Harold Beery.
