Lakeshore Summer Chapel
Location: Campbell Road at Lakeshore Drive Douglas / Saugatuck
Date: 1904
This chapel was the outgrowth of a Douglas lakeshore Sunday School begun by a beach-mom from Oak Park, Illinois. The children of the School collected enough pennies for the Chapel to cover about half its cost. The architect was a young Oak Park architect who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright and appears to have collaborated with Wright on this project. The very simple wood structure reflects the cottagers desire for a structure that reflects the surrounding landscape. It continues today as a non-denominational chapel.
