Rescuing the Francis Lifeboat

The Center acquired and restored a regulation iron lifeboat that was designed by Joseph Francis (one of the founders of the lifesaving movement) and built by the same people who made the Civil War’s famous “Old Ironsides.” The 1854 Francis Metallic Surfboat is one of only two known to remain in existence.
