Heritage Preservation Awards 2005-2007

2023.06.05
The Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society’s Heritage Preservation Committee established the Heritage Preservation Awards in 2001 to further the Society’s mission “to provide leadership in enabling the community at-large to connect with and understand its past, to preserve the quality of community life, and to respect and use the area’s history to shape its future.” Leading economists and forward-thinking governmental leaders have recognized the social and economic value of promoting and preserving cultural assets. The Saugatuck-Douglas area, with its longstanding reputation as a center for arts and cultural pursuits, has a leg up on most communities in using its past to inspire visitors and residents to come to the area. In the Saugatuck area historic architecture, arts, and culture are “natural resources” that should be recognized, preserved and featured among the most The five types of awards included: The NEW CONSTRUCTION award is presented to owners, designers, and builders who introduce new buildings into the landscape, or make significant additions to existing buildings, which respect the architectural integrity of existing structures and the area’s historic character in terms of style, scale, material, etc., and are compatible with their surroundings. The PRESERVATION of the BUILT ENVIRONMENT award is presented to owners, designers, and builders for rehabilitation or renovation projects that preserve the architectural integrity of existing structures; respect the area’s historic character in terms of style, scale, material, etc.; and blend well with their surroundings The HERITAGE PRESERVATION LEADERSHIP award is given to individuals, groups, or organizations who have demonstrated through private or public acts or projects outstanding commitment to the preservation of the area’s historic rural and village character. The BLUE STAR CORRIDOR award is presented to businesses, individuals, or groups, who build, restore, or renovate structures that enhance the Blue Star Corridor, and which display distinctive qualities and respect the area’s historic character in terms of style, scale, material, etc. Special “HONOR and RESPECT” awards are given to property owners whose historic properties have been maintained and remain true to their original design, scale, and character; represent a “pivotal” architectural style as a key component of the historic built environment; or have special significance within the local historical context.
