George's full name is Alex George Erickson but it seems he seldom used Axel. That building which was built on the site of the previous blacksmith shop, dates to about 1920. The Village Garage was on the west side of Griffith directly across the street. Geo did a lot of repair work on Village equipment. He bought the shop equipment and business in 1941, and operated it as A.G.E. Welding & Repair until a mild stroke in the early 1960s. George Erickson was a member of the American Legion Bruner-Frehse Post 137 and a life member of Masonic Lodge 328. He became deaf in his mid-fourties, learned to lip-read and prospered in spite of that affliction. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Saugatuck. Being deaf, he had stopped attending church services. Pastor Richard Campbell, in preparation for the funeral message, asked to see his Bible, saw that it was marked and well used — and declared ER-GEricksonwfish.JPG copy.jpg 752KB ER-LillianEllen-Bryan-Erickson0001.JPG 296KB; Lillian Ellen (Bryan) Erickson was the daughter of Samuel Willison Bryan Jr and Ellen Serena (Olsen) Bryan. ... Her parents purchased a 40 acre fruit farm in 1886. The property, which originally extended east from Lake Michigan, would eventually include the Douglas Public Beach, the Rosemont Resort, peach orchards, a chestnut grove and portions of the Golf Course — the Saugatuck Township property tax in 1896 was $17.76, based on an assessed valuation of $1000. Lillian was born August 16, 1895. The farmhouse was destroyed by fire in 1900; its replacement would become the Rosemont Resort after a later addition. The farm became part of the Village of Douglas in 1904. Severely cold winters and peach tree disease damaged the peach economy. The Rosemont was established and farming ceased after 1910. Her father died in 1918. In the beginning the resort served meals. Over time it became Bed & Breakfast. Lillian was part of the resort's staff until her marriage to George in 1928. She resided in Saugatuck for 56 years in a house on Grand St. built by her husband and her brother Douglas Bryan. She was a loving wife & mother, a good neighbor and a long-time successful vegetable gardener. During the 40's and 50's, she kept the books for her husband's business, A.G.E Weld & Repair. She survived breast cancer surgery in the late 1970s. She was a member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church. Following the death of her husband in 1981, she relocated to Phoenix in 1985 to live with her daughter. She was a very healthy woman (no prescription meds) until her final year. No other sibling, parent or grandparent lived to be more than 80. Her remains are interred in the Saugatuck Riverside Cemetery next to those of her husband.
