Architect George W. Maher designed the Maplewood Hotel's 1923 Colonial Revival facade but is best known for the grand residences he built for affluent Chicago/Kenilworth families. Sometime between 1900-1905, Maher purchased a 80-acre fruit farm south of Douglas and built three cottages there for a family resort.
