The lighter was rowed up the river to a broad expanse that formed a lake. There the two landed. unloaded the lighter and became the first permanent residents of what is now Saugatuck. The year was 1830. Others came and settled in the fertile fields and forrested hills to form a community. Others came and settled nearer the Lake and became the founders of Singapore with its great lumber mills, its wildcat bank, its Hotel Astor. Lumber was the big business, then shipbuilding, but others turned to commercial fishing and to growing orchards. Lumber was king for decades with shipyards, tanneries, and wood-working plants. In time the forests of the surrounding area had been stripped, and gradually fruit was the big business of the area.
