A New York Times article from 19 July 1987 states "more than 3,500 people from four states signed a petition to keep McDonald's away." The article goes on to outline the town's history as a resort from the first "city people" sighting in 1873 to "in 1892, The Grand Rapids Democrat observed that Saugatuck was becoming 'a summer resort for people who are tired of the world.' "
