Rediscovering a Michigan Painter

From "Robert Fort: Rediscovering a Michigan Artist" at the OSH 2020 Robert Harry Fort 1875 – 1954 Untitled (Winter Afternoon in Saugatuck) c. 1947 | oil on canvas This painting explores Griffith Street, to the far right, looking south towards Douglas. In the foreground we see the Newnham House where Mr. Fort lived with his sister and brother-in-law. Beyond it is the Herbert House which subsequently burned; the building at the corner now houses Amaru Leather. In the background, on the right, is the old Fruit Exchange building, present-day Couglin Park. In the far left background is the Del-Mar Hotel which in 1965 became the Blue Tempo jazz club, a well-known gay-friendly bar, destroyed by fire in 1976.
