The New Orleans-style Douglas Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) parade and associated celebrations were a community high-point event in the bleak late winter. A Jan. 4, 2001 Commercial Record clipping names The Mystik Krewe of the Kalamazoo (Julie Abel, Tarue Pullen, Jacqueline Carey, Jean Crawford, Corky Oja, Sondra Stevenson and Cheri Miller) as the originators of the celebration.
