Dale E. Metternich (1943-2002) grew up in Grand Rapids. He graduated from Kendall School of Design in 1963. While at design school he met Blythe. They married and had three children Gregg, Jeff and Mandy. Later, Blythe and Dale divorced. Metternich was an Interior designer with A.S.I.D. [American Society of Interior Designers] certification. He managed the design studio at Klingmans Furniture, was director of design Hekman Furniture, owned Metternich-Cole design studio (1979-1988), and served on the historic preservation committees in Petoskey and Saugatuck. In 1992 he was director of design for LaBarge Mirrors/Marlboro Lamps owned by Masco Corp. By 1997 he was vice-president for La Barge Inc. of Holland, Mich. He was co-owner with Dean Hirner of "Of Title and Tinkers" at 321 Water Street in Saugatuck. After his death, he donated his "Stag's Leap" house at 994 Holland Street, Saugatuck to Ox-Bow to fund the construction of the Metternich lodge on campus.
