Voyages Into Michigan's Past picture number 2 Foreword The Fort with an Larry B. Massie is a Michigan product and proud of it. He was born in Grand Rapids and grew up in Allegan. Following a tour in Viet Nam as a U.S. Army para-trooper, he worked as a telephone lineman, construction laborer, bartender, and in a pickle factory before earning three degrees in history from Western Michigan University. He honed his research skills during an eight-year position with the W.M.U. Archives and Regional History Collection. He left in 1983, to launch a career as a freelance historian specializing in the heritage of the state he loves. An avid book collector, he lives with his wife and workmate Priscilla, and their 25,000-volume library, in a one-room schoolhouse nestled in the Allegan State Forest. Sons, Adam, Wallie, and Larry Jr., as well as a border collie named Maggie, and Jiggs, a huge saffron-colored feline, insure there is never a dull moment.
