After years of foot dragging, the village of Saugatuck installed their first sewage treatment facility south of Mill Street, between Holland Street and Simonson Drive, just upstream of the Peterson Grist Mill. Saugatuck councilperson Dick Hoffman if often cited as an individual who moved this project forward. In 1977, the facility was replaced by the Kalamazoo Lake Sewer & Water facility off Jack Wilson Road in Saugatuck Township.
