THE LAKE MICHIGAN SHORE ASSOCIATION Mission and Purpose The Lake Michigan Shore Association was created to protect and enhance the aesthetic qualities and property values of the Lake Shore area. Membership is open to all property owners residing in the area bounded by Lake Michigan on the west, Interstate 1-196 on the east, 126th Avenue on the north, and 114th Avenue on the south. Founded in 1962, the Association has made notable contributions to the preservation of the quality and character of the area. Through strategic lobbying and proactive efforts of the association’s members many causes have been aided, and our collective representation has made a significant difference. Some of the issues that have been addressed over the years are as follows: Protection of the tree lined ambiance of Lakeshore Drive when County and State highway department regulations required clear cutting and regrading of the 66' right of way to meet highway standards in the course of resurfacing Lakeshore Drive. Our efforts preserved many of our stately and historically old maple, oak and beech trees from the highway departments bulldozers and chain saws. Lobbied the County to maintain the designation Lakeshore Drive when the County wanted to rename it 70th Street. Successfully supported the local concern to withhold zoning approval of a proposed intensive use of turkey farms immediately adjacent to the Lakeshore Area. Currently supporting local concern to withhold zoning changes, Specfic Approval Uses [SAU], and zoning variances, that are being sought to construct a huge fueling facility [cars and trucks], a restaurant, convenience store and car wash at Exit 34 of 1-196 and M89. Repeatedly, the Association has advocated strong land use zoning measures meant to protect and enhance the quality of the built environment within and immediately adjacent to our boundaries. Provide a forum for the dissemination of information / education regarding property assessments and taxes, lake level projections and shoreline protection measures, surface drainage and creek pollution, utility services and extension plans, and general interest items that affect our area. The Association is constantly concerned about activities that would adversely impact our area and encourages actions that enhance the quality of life and the environment along the Lake Shore. The Association meets annually in July or August [ so that our out of the area members may participate ]. All area property owners are urged to join existing members and personally support this vitally needed organization which presents a meaningful collective voice on issues of concern to our membership.
