Camp Gray in 1940
Credits say "Narration by Bud Hogarty, staff member in 1940
Produced and photographed by Theodore D. Shaw [Sr.]"
30-minute color movie that shows a group of boys from the Presbyterian Neighborhood Houses of Chicago (specifically the Howell Neighborhood house at 1831 South Racine Ave.), boarding the Pere Marquette train to travel to Camp Gray. They disembark at Fennville and board camp buses. After some group singing on the dunes, they boys are welcomed by Mr. R.A. Walker, Westminster camp director.
Narration mentions Florence Wright, Gertrude Ray and Florence Ray. Footage includes scenes at the Recreation Hall, fishing trip to the Ox-Bow lagoon, boats on the Kalamazoo rowing upriver to New Richmond to stay overnight and float back the following morning, making crafts like clay sculptures, candle holders, lanyards, sawing, swimming, playing in the beach, getting sun burnt, walking to dinner at Westminster lodge, playing baseball, and watching sun set.
The next segment is the arrival of mothers-and-children groups designed to give mothers a break from care giving, a shot if the Peniel Nook center of the Hebrew Christian Settlement Group, and colorfully costumed by less happy Italian-immigrant mothers and children, described as being from the Girabaldi settlement house.
Third segment is a girls group (co-ed camping did not happen until after WWII) doing much the same as the boy's group.
