SYLVIA RANDOLPH “AN ART-FILLED LIFE” SDHS June 10, 2009 Presentation by James Schmiechen at the SCA “I think we could say that Sylvia, even in old age, did not slow down for a minute. Any time there was an opportunity to experiment with something new she grabbed it. She was always ready to run a new race in the art world--be it fabrics, furniture, costume, painting, and even food...She grew up to be...a woman who took advantage of the often limited but also increasingly open doors for women in a century of tremendous change.” -- Jim Schmiechen 6-10-09 While sharing photos of Sylvia through her ages and her work, Schmiechen outlined the cultural milieu which both influenced and in turn was influenced by her amazing artistic productivity. He visited every nook and cranny of her life in Saugatuck including her creative cooking and costuming. This one hour video will be a wonderful resource for art teachers and anyone interested in understanding this area icon in significant depth. The numerous photos shown in the program show up clearly in the video. Text by John Shack
