Community Hospital Basement
Photograph
Lois Corkhill and another nurse fill out their paperwork in a basement with bare light bulbs, extension cord garlanding the walls and exposed pipes.
This image was featured as History Mystery #46 with the question "In the old days folks had to make do! Where is this?" and the answer "The Community Hospital was a converted residence on the corner of Center St. and the Blue Star, ca 1950 - even the basement was crowded. Today the grand old place is the Kirby House B&B."

When the Community Hospital was first established in 1932 it was the first modern healthcare facility in the towns. But by the late 1950s the former Sarah Kirby home was overcrowded and about to lose its license. This photo was taken as part of a campaign to raise funds for a new facility.
