Pier Cove 3 of 3

2021.87.38

THIRD OF A SERIES - PIERS & BEACH Photographs tell the story of the Pier Cove beach. The piers, the original and commercial reason for the existence of the settlement stayed in use until 1916. Note the rails that allowed horse-drawn carts to bring cargo to vessels at pierside. The piers made it easy for Pier Cove visitors to come by ship - a short overnight trip from Chicago. Husbands came on weekends to be with their summering families. In 1921 O. C. Simonds donated 66 feet of beach to Ganges township for the Pier Cove public beach. Today, you can sun and swim on the same beach, look for pier remnants and recall the scene a hundred years ago. By Jack Sheridan
