A note accompanying the items said "some in our church died and we held a garage sale. People found these items and thought you or someone should take a look." The church was the Douglas United Church of Christ (DUCC). According to note author Demetrhea Terrien, (telephone interview, June 22, 2022) during the covid pandemic, two church members, Dale and Ted, took Mr. Freund into their home in Allegan for hospice care rather than have Mr. Freund be sent to a hospice in Detroit. After Mr. Freund's passing, the church learned that Mr. Freund had bequeathed the contents of his van (he was homeless) and perhaps a shed to the church. During the subsequent estate sale, a local historian Anna Marie Cox noticed the military items and directed Demetrhea Terrien to bring them to the SDHC. Mr. Freund had children but the relationship was estranged.
