Keewatin coal removal crew
Photograph
One mature man and six young men line up while they take a beer break from a very dirty job. The coal-smudged workers are inside the Keewatin steamship when it was stuck on its journey up the Kalamazoo River. The river bank is visible through the doorway behind the young men.

The older gent is Rolland "Pete" Peterson (far left) who was likely directing the young men — including his son Erik Peterson (wearing glasses) — in shoveling coal out of the Keewatin. According to a mention in the September 21, 1967 Commercial Record, "Back at the Keewatin, 60 tons of coal has been shoveled out and the boilers removed, preparatory to towing her to a permanent mooring at Tower Marina in Douglas this fall."
