Liberty Poles
Archive
Scans of Commercial Record newspaper clippings about Saugatuck's Republican and Democratic Liberty Poles.
The Republican pole was 130-foot-high flagpole — about the equivalent of a 10-story building — that stood on the Village Green from 1868 to at least 1895.
As per research by James T. Fassen, "In the 1960s, Carl Bird recalls that the Democratic flag pole was located at the Haymarket, which was the park in front of the Butler Hotel. He also recalled that the flag pole in the square was 200 feet high and the tallest in the country."
The location of the 100-foot Democratic pole may have been by Saugatuck Village Hall.
