It's a quiet Sunday A.M. I was awakened at 6:05 by a rodent gnawing in the master bedroom. Not wanting to disturb Pia, I slipped bare-assed off to the basement for Deacon. Not wanting Beauty [our new puppy] to escape her basement kennel, I pulled the door closed and then felt my heart drop as I realized I'd just locked myself out of the house. I don't recommend being with an excited puppy with ungirded loins! I managed to shove through the basement doors (I’d barricaded them to keep the dog in) and walk with dignity to the back door. Lee had taken in the key! I had a resigned vision of retreating to the basement and winding up on Beauty's bed until Matt awakened. But then I noticed the lights on in the Nintendo room, so I called quietly to Matt. The lights go out! I call louder but imagine him sneaking guiltily off to his bed and feigned sleep. Just as I despair, Pia calls from the window of the Nintendo room. Final irony: she's been unable to sleep and so she'd left the bedroom so as not to disturb me. She was very puzzled what I was doing with the dog, and Matt, at 6:l0 A.M., naked. So she'd had to check too see that Matt was indeed asleep in his bed before she would come down to save my ass.

After I explained, we went back to bed chuckling.
