All of this information remains stored in one way or another in family albums, scrap books, computer generated CD's, letters, and other documents and writings, most of the originals of which are in my possession. My interest in history, and in particular family history, was nurtured by my father James E. Sheridan, who was a student of history himself. He wrote the definitive history of Saugatuck in his book Saugatuck Through the Years, 1830- 1980, first published in 1982. It was my Uncle Joseph Sheridan, who with my father, encouraged my interest in the family, and who entrusted to me, much of the original family history documents and pictures. My objective in writing this book is to condense the historical material I have accumulated over the years by telling the story of the Sheridan family and how I came to discover it. Although the information contained in this book exists in various forms, it is my intent, by its publication, that the history of the family will always be preserved in one place- this book- for future generations. I may never know all of my grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is my hope, that at least some of the members of those future generations will, at some point, take the time to understand and appreciate what their ancestors went through in their lives as one generation followed another. I wish to especially thank my brother Jack for all his Sheridan family research, invaluable help and encouragement. Without his assistance this book would never have been written. His persistence in researching, studying and documenting bits and pieces of historical information, as he discovered them over the past 17 years, has been an important part in reconstructing our family history and its various branches.
