Historian James Sheridan describes a canoe trip down the Kalamazoo and the various ways to cross the river including the short-lived bridge that was at the Chain Ferry crossing in Saugatuck, the old Swing Bridge, Calkin's Bridge in Allegan, the two bridges at New Richmond, the M-89 bridge at Fennville, and the Interstate Highway I-196 bridge at St. Pierre Point. A final note is about a ferry operation near the Red Banks below New Richmond at the Pottawattomie Lodge hunting camp operated Gib Johnson and George Tisdale's ferry Isobel that crossed Kalamazoo Lake between the west shore and the foot of Butler Street.
