Gotham Lifebuoy

Flotation device from the Gotham, a fishing tug that sank the night of December 11, 1943. The ring-shaped life preserver is made of cork and wrapped in white-painted canvas. A rope is attached to the ring in four places with additional strips of canvas. "Gotham" and "Saugatuck" are hand painted on the ring with black paint.

Five people, Lewis Gotham, Sam Gotham, Fred Gotham, F. Harley Jones and 15-year-old Billy Jones perished when the Gotham went down at the narrow mouth of the Kalamazoo River.

This items was loaned to the Impression5 Science Center as part of a traveling version of the 2002 SDHC museum exhibit "Storm, Fire and Ice." On Saturday, April 29, 2023 Matthew Hill, Director of Exhibits of the Impression 5 Science Center in Lansing dropped by the History Center to return the life ring to Sally Winthers.
