Founded in 1836 by Oshea Wilder, Singapore was a mill town located only a few miles away from current day Saugatuck and was intended to rival Chicago and Milwaukee at its time. Famous for its wildcat bank and being swallowed by sand dunes, stories of Singapore are popularly re-told decade after decade. While the town was vacated and moved by 1875, the legacy of Singapore still lives on today. Often referred to as a “ghost town” or “Michigan’s Pompeii,” both academic and public intrigue around this mill town continues today. To help inform and educate those interested in Singapore, there is a collected list of materials available in the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society’s archives and library and also online and outside materials for further research.
