Hoerman presents us with a lush arrangement of roses sitting within the window frame that looks out to mountains in the distance. An Arts and Crafts style bench and a curtain complete the theatrical backdrop for this scene. An artist and businesswoman, Christiana Hoerman began painting in 1925 when she studied at Ox-Bow with Frederick Fursman and Albert Krehbiel. She painted landscapes but is best known for her still-life paintings of flowers. Born in Chicago to German immigrant parents, she married artist Carl Hoerman in 1907. They moved to Saugatuck in 1920 and began their seasonal travel to California in 1927. After her husband’s death in 1955, Christiana continued to operate the Art Gallery as she had for many years. Christiana Hoerman was also active in community organizations including the Saugatuck Women’s Club and Community Hospital. This painting was likely donated to the Village of Douglas as part of her philanthropy. Gift from the City of the Village of Douglas Accession 2025.38.10
