Ursula Brodbeck Randall Fishing Shacks, Saugatuck c. 1948 | watercolor Notes: Ursula Randall studied painting at OxBow in the 1940s. Though the Summer School of Painting held classes on the OxBow campus, the students often painted around Saugatuck and Douglas. This image of fishing shacks, still common on the Kalamazoo River in the 40s, romanticizes the simple buildings and tools used by the hard-working fishermen. The total lack of negative space give the work an intensity that is almost naïve, but truly exhilarating. The bright trees are the only indication that there is a world outside the composition!
