Open 1953 Art Work At Ox-Bow First week of the 1953 season of the Summer School of Painting brought the largest first-week enrollment in the history of the school, Director Elsa Ulbricht announced. . The large classes in figure painting under Peitro Lazzari got under way Monday morning after the entire school had met for discussion of the season's program. Dan Lutz took the landscape painting classes to the Ferry Store, Riverside Cemetery and other locations for subject matter during the week. The Pottery department under Glenn Nelson started work in the reconstructed pot-shop with much new equipment. Marian Bode and Dorothy Meredith and Madeline Tourtelot are busy with crafts students in weaving, screen printing and jewelry. The graphic arts teachers, Emily Parks and Vera Berdich, gave talks and demonstrations in lithography and etching. Most of these classes, as well as some craft, are conducted in the evenings. Students this year come largely from Illinois but eleven states are represented. From Chicago are enrolled Betty Archias, Robert Anderson, Lucile Brisk, James Guske, Norman Jaffe, Rose Marie Krein- hofner, Bernice Morressey, Claes Oldenburg, Doris and Neil Ross, Augusta Sawite, and Lillian Williams. Other Illinois enrollments are Louise Brune, Highland Park; Marian Imberman, Downers Grove; Barbara and Klindt Houlberg, Crystal Lake; Valborg Nyden, Ten • and Joan Tourtelot, Jean Martin, Katherine Seyl and Ruth Flax, Evanston; and Ruth Rahmeyer, Wyoming. From Wisconsin come Ralph Kohloff, Joanne and Dorothy Lucht, and Louise Martin, Milwaukee; Caroline Piper, Madison; Herbert V. Kohler, Kohler; Heinz Mertes, (Sheboygan;. James Richardson, Eau Claire.
Many States in Ox-Bow Students Many states are represented among the students arrived and studying, at the Summer School of Painting for the 1953 sessions. Illinois and Wisconsin lead in numbers, but others come from various parts of the country. From Iowa are Marietta and Frenkie Eigme, Tingley; Missouri, Clifford and Bette Godwin, Clayton and Lois Johnson, Jeanne Noel, Kansas City; Michigan, Barbara Ann Boot, Grand Rapids; Olive Williams, Saugatuck; Lee Brooks, Holland; Ardis Bishop, Muskegon; Mrs. William Stone, Flint. And there’s Charles Broxmeyer, Philadelphia; Henry Mayeux, Alexandria, La.; Ray Kubecki, Pasadena, Calif.; Gade Coggins, Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. Edward Jarrett, Waco, and John Duncan, Lubbock, Texas; and Robert Hosmer, Syracuse, N.Y. Other members of the colony, both members of the board of directors as well as students, are Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Deam, back again at the Lighthouse after a strenuous year in Philadelphia; Dr. and Mrs. Michael L. Mason, of Chicago, and Mrs. Katherine Kolb, of Wooddale, who also have a cottage on the grounds. Kirkland Photos Open Art Season at Village Gallery Saugatuck once again begins its summer season as an art center for visitors, artists arid residents with the opening this week of the Village Art Gallery in a series of exhibitions sponsored by the Summer School of Painting. As the first of three exhibitions during the summer is a comprehensive group of photographs by Wallace Kirkland of the Life magazine staff of photographers. In recent years he has been a frequent visiting artist at Ox-Bow and found numerous camera studies in the region. A series of these studies are included in his present show. The Kirkland show comes from winter and spring showings at the Art Institute of Chicago, Wisconsin State College in Milwaukee, the New York office of Life, and the Fine Arts Department of Ohio University. His subjects range from character portraiture through abstract forms developed in his studies of insect and plant life and dramatic sand textures. Supplementing the Kirkland display is a group of creative weavings by Elsa Ulbricht, director at Ox-Bow, and those of Dorothy Meredith and Marian Bode. Mr. Kirkland will give an informal talk at 8 p.m., Sunday (July 5) at the Gallery to which the public is invited, followed by a reception for Mr. and Mrs. Kirkland. Hosts and hostesses include Mrs. Marjorie Breckenridge, Dr. and Mrs. Michael L. Mason, Mrs. John Norton, arid Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Deam. The current exhibition runs through July 13, and the Gallery is open daily from 2 to 5 p.m., except Monday, when it is open from 8 to 10 p.m.
