Ellen Lanyon 1926 - 2013 Backside of the Big Pavilion c. 1945 | watercolor Notes: This painting is a "study" comprised of quick brush strokes. It is a "private" view of the Saugatuck icon. The shade and reclining figure evoke very different emotions than do most images of The Big Pavilion. The south side (the "back") of the Big Pavilion housed a movie theater above and a restaurant/coffee house below. The building was always red in color. Ellen Lanyon was a well-known figure in the art scenes of both Chicago and New York. She also remained a regular summer visitor to Saugatuck. This watercolor was done while she was a student at Ox-Bow. Collection: Saugatuck Douglas History Center Gift of: Ellen Lanyon 2011.03.02
