Martha Deam Severt 1929 - 2014 The Big Pavilion 1983 | oil on canvas Notes: Martha Deam Severt studied art at Ox-Bow and the University of Pennsylvania as well as in many countries of the Orient and Southeast Asia where she traveled in her work with the U. S. government. She has had one-man shows in Japan, Taiwan, Burma, Malaysia and Singapore. She taught painting during the winter at the Deland Museum in Florida. (From Painting the Town, Kit Lane) Severt is well-known locally for a whimsical poster-map of the Saugatuck area. The artist uses different paint application techniques to enhance the perception of different kinds of texture and surface. The linear "coloring book" image recalls the iconic dance hall which had been lost to fire a quarter century earlier. On the right one can see the back of the movie theater that was on the south end of the large structure.
