Polka did many portraits of pets. These paintings were often playful and decorative. "Coco" was the pet of Butler Street resident, Chuck Parrot - and a familiar sight being carried along that street by its master. Polka studied both in Europe and, later, at Ox-Bow. In the 1960s, he opened a studio in Saugatuck, where he taught and painted landscapes and portraits of people and animals.
