About the Event

All are invited to a unique opportunity to explore the historical legacy of Dykstra Funeral Home on Lake Street in Saugatuck, highlighting its connections with noted Saugatuck artist and architect Carl Hoerman (1885-1955) who designed the historic building.

The open house program, a collaboration between Dykstra and the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center, welcomes the public to explore Lakeshore art and history while socializing and seeing friends old and new. Refreshments will be served and the event is provided free of charge.

This program explores the layers of history at the Lake Street site and notable art displayed there. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to explore the building and see outstanding paintings by Carl Hoerman and his wife Christina Hoerman. SDHC executive director Eric Gollannek will give a presentation on the history and legacy of Carl and Christiana Hoerman through attention to the sublime Grand Canyon paintings on view and the history of the Gothic Revival architecture of the building.  A presentation by art conservator Kari Miller-Fenwood of Holland, Michigan will further explain the painstaking processes that restored the large oil on canvas paintings on view, work her firm Miller Fenwood completed after the rediscovery of the paintings after a long period of neglect.

Additional open house hours will continue on Thursday and Friday, May 16th and 17th, offering access to the building and art at Dykstra Funeral Home.
