There are many written and oral stories about the Mounds and the Grand River in Owashtanong (Grand Rapids). Many of the most present stories are shared from a settler-colonial perspective that privileges settler perspectives of land and history. For this talk, Andrea Riley-Mukavetz, a citizen of the crane clan of the Chippewa (Ojibwe), draws upon archival material, oral history, and Indigenous perspectives to share another story and history of the Mounds and Grand River that recognizes and prioritizes Anishinaabeg beliefs of land, relationships, and diplomacy.
