About the Event
Presentation by Rick Bosch.
The main part of this house was built in 1844–45 by Isaac Fairbanks for George N. Smith, a Congregational missionary to local Native Americans at Waukazoo’s Village. It is the oldest building in the area. The site also once included a church, a school, and Native dwellings. Early Dutch settlers (1846–47) stayed in this house and a nearby cabin. As the Dutch community expanded, Smith and the Native people relocated to Grand Traverse Bay, while Fairbanks stayed and contributed to the founding of Holland.
