THE EVENING AT THE PARLOR EVENT IS POSTPONED. WATCH FOR A NEW DATE COMING FOR 2026.
All are invited to an exclusive and unique Halloween-themed event exploring the history of death, memory, and funeral traditions at the Lakeshore. The event, a partnership between the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center and Dykstra Funeral Home, offers a deeper look at the rituals and mysteries surrounding funerals in a casual and accessible format.
Set within one of the most historic buildings in Saugatuck, Dykstra Funeral Home at 520 Lake Street in Saugatuck, is notable for its connections with Saugatuck artist and architect Carl Hoerman (1885-1955), who designed renovations to the historic building and artwork featured inside.
Evening at the Parlor begins with a presentation by Dykstra funeral director Orlando Pena that explores the history of death, memory, and funeral traditions in the Lakeshore region. Attendees will enjoy unusual access to the 160-year-old institution, including its spaces and an up-close presentation of historical artifacts from the Dykstra archives. SDHC director Eric Gollannek will provide a history of funeral home architecture as part of the event, including the artistic legacy of Carl and Christiana Hoerman in Saugatuck.
The event will start at 5 PM for an hour-long “visitation”, allowing attendees to explore the architecture and archives of Dykstra Funeral Home as well as the artworks of Carl Hoerman. The educational program will begin at 6 PM.
