About the Event
Cost: Free
Something storied is well-known, sometimes even legendary. This exhibit explores the stories embodied in the remarkable art and artifacts of the Lakeshore, some familiar, others exceptional, collected by the SDHC over more than thirty years. Composed of nearly forty original works, worthy of focused contemplation individually, the exhibit also sets these artifacts into conversation with one another.
Whether you have called the Lakeshore home for multiple generations or if you are visiting for the first time, these views and stories will be familiar to you. The ‘storied’ artworks and artifacts in this exhibit invite you to go deeper into the Lakeshore and ask what’s remained the same and also what has changed over more than a century?
The exhibit showcases a diversity of artifacts and artworks with deep Lakeshore connections: paintings by founding Ox-Bow artists Francis Chapin, Frederick Fursman, and Edgar Rupprecht; subjects featuring maritime life, domestic scenes and still lifes, and landscapes of river, lake, dune, and town scenes. Come experience Saugatuck’s working waterfront, historic hotels, quiet interior spaces, and the Big Pavilion through sculpture, oil paintings, pastels, etchings, lithographs, and watercolors.
The exhibit opens to the public on Friday, September 26th, with a VIP preview reception on Thursday, September 25th for sponsors and SDHC Lifetime Members.
Attendees will also be able to view the award-winning Century of Progress: 100 Years of LGBTQ History exhibition and additional art from the Center’s permanent collection.
